Grant / Financial Administrator Continuing Education Training

Upon completion of regular mandatory training (Post Award Compliance Training--8 hrs.), Grant/Financial administrators of sponsored projects are required to attend each of the following RCC Continuing Education classes.

To register for a class, please select one of the classes from below.

1. Effort Reporting (4 CPE Credit Hours)

This effort reporting class will demystify & help you better understand issues related to effort reporting. We will also roll out a new tool called the "Master List."
Effort Reporting class objectives include: review of effort reporting and cost sharing; understanding salary components of a grant proposal budget; understanding the relationship between payroll and effort certification forms; understanding the effort package; and discussion of ongoing issues.

2. Internal Controls, Proper Coding and Reconciliation (4 CPE Credit Hours)

The course is designed to help Grant/Business Managers gain a greater understanding of necessary internal controls, minimum requirements and best practices for reconciling your financials and review the importance of proper coding. The goal is for users to have the knowledge necessary to create/enhance one's own departmental controls and reconciling process by knowing how to stay compliant. The course material will also briefly discuss Proper Coding and its importance.

3. Effective Grant Management (4 CPE Credit Hours)

This course will review risks of grant management that have been identified by the Office of Inspector General Office (OIG). The five risks that we will address are: excessive and untimely cost transfers, last minute spending, significant over and under spending, un-captured cost sharing commitments and late spending on federal grants. We will provide you with tools to monitor and reduce these risks in your department (reinforcing SAP reports and working through case studies). We will also review and provide you with a one page take-away, "Who You Going to Call" document that will give you resources for answers to frequently asked questions received by the Office of Sponsored Programs. We will also discuss new effort policies for faculty working on sponsored projects.

4. Management of Selected Post Award Issues (4 CPE Credit Hours)

This class features information and practical applications in managing three important compliance elements: direct charging administrative costs to federal awards, subrecipient monitoring, and close-outs. Direct charging of administrative costs to federal awards has become a significant national issue. This class will provide background as to the federal regulations that govern charging administrative costs and practical information on how to complete Exception Form I and II to request permission to charge these costs to your federal award. The session will also feature a discussion of subrecipient monitoring: what this means, and how Duke University manages this process. A detailed flowchart and explanation of the subrecipient monitoring requirements will be provided. As both direct charging and subrecipient monitoring are very much involved in completing the close-out process, we will cover effective methods of close-out, appropriate close-out steps, and helpful checklists and forms.
