PDF RCC Training Programs Overview

Mandatory Compliance Education and Training

PI Compliance Education

Web-based program for PIs is updated every 12 months, depending on emergence of new compliance issues and processes.

Business Managers Continuing Education

Business Managers are provided with annual updates in sessions that are held throughout the year. These sessions are designed to provide Business Managers with a comprehensive overview of compliance issues, and best practices in managing units in a compliant manner. Business Managers are required to attend at least one Business Manager Continuing Education session per year.

Grant Manager Training

Individuals who manage any portion of grant activities are expected to complete mandatory training based on the following criteria:

  • Greater than 50% job duties devoted to grant management and less than 2 years experience at Duke University
    • Complete the Research Research Administration Academy (RAA) within the first two years of grant-related assignment at Duke University (Note: Because RAA is restricted enrollment, supervisors may chose to send grant managers with greater than 50% grant-related duties to FasTracks classes until space in RAA becomes available. However, RAA classes must be completed in sequence with the cohort, even if those classes are a repeat of FasTracks classes.)

  • Greater than 50% job duties devoted to grant management and greater than 2 years experience at Duke University
    • As of July 1, 2009, must have completed all mandatory training classes under the former RCC requirements; or complete new mandatory requirements (Basic Compliance Online, FasTracks Level I classes)

  • Less than 50% job duties devoted to grant management

Project Support Staff Training

Individuals who indirectly support the development and management of sponsored projects but who typically are not performing grant management duties should complete Basic Compliance Online. Examples of these individuals include: procurers, laboratory technicians, medical secretaries, etc.

Certificate Programs

Research Administration Academy (RAA) (Required)

This is a cohort-based program offered three times a year. RAA is designed specifically to give participants "hands-on" training in grant management skills. The preferred audience is new grant managers with less than two-years experience at Duke University and greater than 50% job duties devoted to grant management. Others, including those with more than one-year experience, may be accepted with supervisor recommendation provided space is available.

Research Administration Institute (RAI)  (Optional)

The RAI will be a series of advanced classes designed for senior grant managers. The preferred audience is individuals with greater than three years of grant experience and greater than 50% job duties devoted to grant management; or less than three years of experience with a recommendation by direct supervisor provided space is available. Classes may be taken in any order.  Note:  RAI classes will be open enrollment (See Level II FasTracks).  To qualify for the RAI certificate, individuals must have completed all RAI classes and apply for the certificate by enrolling in the culminating RAI seminar class.  RAI will be available in the Fall 2009.

Continuing Education

The RCC, RAA, and RAI Certificates require continuing education and the mandatory class “Management of Selected Post Award Issues” offered each year.  (Note: “Management of Selected Post Award Issues” content is updated annually).

The new Continuing Education requirements are: at least four credits per year, including the class “Management of Selected Post Award Issues” offered each year. Only classes and sessions offered through ORA, ORS, OSP, CRSO, and SOMCO may be counted towards this requirement. RCC also allows attendance at NCSRA, SRA, and/or NCURA meetings to count towards continuing education. The semi-annual Certified Research Administrator Study Group sessions at Duke University may also be counted, provided you attend all sessions. All programs/classes offered through ORA, ORS, OSP, CRSO, and SOMCO count as one credit.  Attendance at external professional meetings and the Duke University CRA Study Group each count as two credits.

FasTracks

FasTracks are offered at two levels. Level I FasTracks are open enrollment and feature focused training on specific areas of grant management. They are designed for entry level grant managers with less than 50% grant-related duties and/or >50% grant managers fulfilling their required mandatory training. Level II FasTracks are open to all grant managers and feature advanced topics in compliance and research management.
